Alban's

Housemistress: Lizzie Alexander

Lizzie took over as Housemistress of Alban's in September 2008. Lizzie lives in Alban's House with her husband Robert, daughter Maja and son Rueben. She graduated from Nottingham University in 1999 with a degree in Music. Whilst at Nottingham she played hockey but has since taken up rowing at Broxbourne Rowing Club. Lizzie joined Haileybury in 2003 as Registrar, a post that she held until 2011 alongside being Housemistress.

The Alban's girls are a talented lot, winning Junior House hockey and netball in the last year alone. Prior to that they have won House swimming twice and have very recently won the recycling competition - perhaps that means they actually eat more pizza than anyone else…

Origins of the House

The shell of the Old Sanatorium was refurbished and opened in September 1977 as Haileybury's first girls' House. It was named Alban's to mark the centenary of the founding of the St Alban's Diocese. The Old Sanatorium was built in 1867. A charge of seven shillings per term 'Medical Fees' were added to each boy's bill to pay for the building!

House tutors

Alex Smith - Assistant Housemistress
Alex joined Haileybury in September 2010 as Head of Spanish after three years as a languages teacher at Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School. She spent her first year at Haileybury as a tutor in Lower School and then joined the Albans team in September 2011. Amongst her other commitments she has enjoyed running the Senior Enrichment Group and coaching boys' and girls' hockey. Alex is a keen sportswoman and before joining the Haileybury community played for the National Premier League team Reading Ladies. In her spare time she plays tennis, surfs and dances flamenco but above all she loves a good cup of coffee.

Emma Webdale - Resident Tutor
Emma is the newest member of the Alban's team, having joined Haileybury in September 2012 to teach Psychology. She is currently resident tutor in the House which is a great way to get really involved with everything that goes on at Haileybury. Outside of the classroom Emma is involved with netball and hopes to assist with cricket in the summer, having played for Essex for a number of years. She hopes to also get some girls involved with cricket over the summer.

In her previous career Emma was a Physiotherapist and was lucky enough to work with the All Blacks and Welsh international rugby teams. She also had a role during the Olympics over the summer of 2012, working with the wrestlers. At Haileybury Emma provides some pre-match strapping and taping to the rugby teams in order to keep them as injury free as possible!

Sarah McDonald - Tutor
Sarah joined Haileybury in 2011, having previously taught at St Alban's High School for Girls. She is Head of Religious Studies and involved with the Lower School Enrichment Programme and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. Sarah grew up in Northern Ireland and read Biblical Studies at the University of St Andrews, before undertaking her PGCE and MEd at Homerton College, Cambridge. Sarah is married to Ben and together they enjoy travelling, spending time with family and friends and walking in the countryside.

Jess Burger - Tutor

Jess joined Haileybury in September 2008 after two years at St Alban's School. She was educated at Westonbirt School and then went on to study Geography at UCL, where she also completed her PGCE. At Haileybury she is involved in Duke of Edinburgh and Debating and looks forward to sport in the Summer Term when it stops raining! To wind down at the end of a long week/term, Jessica enjoys good food, travelling to every corner of the globe, fine wine, time with friends, and gooey chocolate brownies!

Maggie Brooking - Tutor
Maggie was educated at The Winchester County High School for Girls and Peter Symond's Sixth Form College in Winchester. From there she went on to Bedford College of Physical Education where she studied a degree in human movement studies. Her first teaching post was at Broxbourne School where she moved on to become Head of Girls' Games and finally Director of Sport. With the birth of her second child, she decided that a part-time teaching post would be a better balance with family life and therefore moved to Haileybury in 1998, which was the first year that girls were introduced into our Lower School. Maggie is married to Nick and has two children at Haileybury. As well as a hectic family life, her hobbies include all sport, travel, good food and French wine.
