THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939 -1945

Just names on the cloister wall,

Young men from long ago.

They died at Dunkirk, Norway, Crete, Iraq,

El Alamein & the North African Campaigns.

They fell in Sicily & Italy at the battles at Anzio,

Monte Cassino and Sangro River.

They also died on D-Day & in the liberation of Western Europe

including Caen and Arnhem..

The fighting in the Far East saw their deaths at Singapore, Malaya’

Hong Kong, Borneo, Java, & Papua New Guinea.

They fought and died in Burma.

They were Chindits and they fell at the epic battle of Kohima.

They died at Sea, in both the Royal Navy and the Merchant Navy. 

They were lost with the battleships HMS Hood, Barham, Prince of Wales & the Repulse. 

They were lost on Aircraft carriers, cruisers, destroyers , submarines, the little patrol vessels, MTBs and mine sweepers .

In the air, they died in the fighters defending Britain and Malta, were lost in their dozens in bombers, particularly over Europe & died as glider pilots and with balloon detachments. 

Training to fly also took its toll, as it had done in World War 1.

They were Commandos dying at Dieppe, Italy, France & Germany, with others lost in the Far East. They were Paras. too.

Others were lost on clandestine missions.

They died in the Blitz on Britain & in prison camps, both as servicemen and civilians. They ranged in age from 17 to 73.

Let us not forget them.
