THE CAMPAIGNS & WARS 1862 - 1914

On the 25th July 1903 Lieutenant General, Sir John French unveiled the Obelisk as a memorial to those, who fell in the South African Wars.
These pages are dedicated to the memory of the former pupils of our school, who died in the many conflicts of the Victorian & Edwardian eras. They served both in the Armed Forces and as Civilian Administrators. Their deaths were often painful whether from war or disease. The wars & campaigns they served in, were often fought on flimsy pretexts and in many cases, were rooted in a desire for power or trade advantage. Nevertheless, this should not detract from their bravery nor their loss. From these beginnings grew the British Commonwealth, where people of all races, creeds and colours can live in harmony. In the later World Wars, millions of these Commonwealth citizens from Africa, the Indian Sub-continent, Asia and the Pacific, as well as from Australia, Canada and New Zealand joined Britain in her fight for survival. Thus from their loss has grown a fitting epitaph.
