Previous Projects

Haileybury has been founded on philanthropy. Indeed, without the generosity and support of the Haileybury Family, the School would be a very different place.

Founded by a group of donors and life governors, the grounds were purchased at auction for £18,000 with further sums raised as down payments, enabling Haileybury to open its doors to pupils on 23 September 1862.

From the two Yorkshire boys who were Haileybury's first pupils through to today's 750-plus girls and boys, education at Haileybury has relied on the benefaction and generosity of its family.

Over more recent times donations and support have come in many guises: the organ in Chapel, the piano in Bradby Hall, the swimming pool, Centenary Studies and Russell Dore Lower School are all accolades to the community's generosity.

Then, in 2010, we were delighted that many of you made it possible for the School to add further to its academic facilities with the opening of the New Modern Languages Centre. This £2.2 million building has used state-of-the-art technology in its building process and brings the School into the future by aiding our ability to teach languages.

The Development Office would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who contributed to this wonderful new facility and to say a big thank you to the key supporters and donors who have made Haileybury what it is today.

Additional projects that we have worked on recently include:

Malthus Hut

The Grade II listed Malthus Hut is an historic building in the grounds of Haileybury. Located by the old outdoor pool, it was known as the "Wings Hut" for a time, and was a privileged space for top swimmers who would use this small hut to change. It needs much restoration and repair, and a figure of £10,000 would be needed for this work.

We are delighted to announce that we have now raised the funds required for the renovation work of the Malthus Hut. As an historic building within the grounds of the School, this very important project can now commence.

Thank you to all of our donors who have helped us raise £11,050 towards this very worthy and historic project.

Sailing fleet

Haileybury has launched a new fleet of sailing dinghies for training and racing out of Broxbourne. The current fleet of six 420 boats is very tired, out of date and not helping aid success on the water in competitions and races today.

We are delighted to announce that we have now raised £52,000 for this appeal.

Thank you to all those who have help support this fund. The Master in charge of Sailing, Angus Head, is overjoyed at the generosity of the Haileybury community and is now purchasing the six Fireflies in preparation for the new racing season.

An event was held during the Summer term 2011 to launch the new fleet at an event at Broxbourne.

Rackets

The Master in Charge of Rackets, Mike Cawdron, is very keen to build on the outstanding success of the Haileybury Rackets team and improve the facilities at the School.

In the summer of 2011 we announced an appeal to raise funds to complete work on the front wall at a cost of £15,000. Since its launch, donations from both parents and alumni have been made, culminating in a dinner at the Queens Club on 11 November 2011.

We are delighted to announce that we have raised in excess of £16,000 towards this special appeal and work on the court is due to take place at the end of this year’s Rackets season.

"The role of the Development Office is to accelerate the building programme at Haileybury."
