Trevelyan is situated in the main quadrangle at the heart of Haileybury. Its history goes back 144 years, making it one of the oldest at Haileybury. In 1862 there were only two Houses at Haileybury - the "Blue House" and the "Red House". In 1868 the Red House was renamed Trevelyan House after Sir Charles Trevelyan who was a pupil at the East India College from 1824 and later the Governor of Madras. Initially, Trevelyan consisted of a long dormitory with pupils' desks next to their beds. Later, pupils did their academic work and had their own studies in the Centenary Block which is the part of the main quad between Thomason and Big School. In 1993 Bartle Frere, which was situated above Trevelyan, left for its new location and the first floor was changed into study bedrooms and a Common Room. Further refurbishments and improvements were carried out in 1997, 2001 and 2008. There are currently 55 boys in the house, of whom 41 are boarders.
Some well-known old Trevelyan pupils include:
N J A Coghill (1865 - 1869) - Awarded the Victoria Cross
Lord Oaksey (1894 - 1899) - Presiding Judge at the Nuremberg Trials
Sir Alan Ayckbourn CBE (1952 - 1956) - Actor, Theatre Director, Playwright
D H Cooke (1969 - 1974) - England rugby player.
House ethos
Trevelyan has a warm, friendly and welcoming feel and is very much a home from home for the boys with a real family atmosphere. The dormitory for the Removes and Middles leads directly onto the Housemaster's house and the door is literally open all the time. The boys are encouraged to take responsibility for themselves, respecting others and becoming independent and confident but also tolerant and sensitive to others. Of course, achieving individual and collective success academically, musically as well as on the games field and in other extra-curricular fields makes people feel happy and good about themselves. The Housemaster, tutors and prefects work hard to encourage the boys to fulfil their potential and do their best, and get involved in the wider school community by trying new things. Structure and discipline are crucial in setting the right environment for boys to be successful and happy.
