The House is named after The Right Honourable Sir Henry Bartle Frere, a former student of the East India College at Haileybury, who went on to become Governor of Bombay and later High Commissioner of British South Africa.
A statue of Sir Henry, which was unveiled by the Prince of Wales in 1888, stands on the Embankment in London and his tomb can be found in the crypt of St Paul's Cathedral.
Bartle Frere was one of Haileybury's original ‘Quad’ houses, and for over 140 years it occupied what is now part of Trevelyan. In 1994, however, it moved to purpose-built accommodation alongside Avenue where it has continued to flourish. The House benefits from a well-designed dormitory for 20 junior boys, a combination of comfortable twin and single rooms, most with wash-hand basins, for the 30+ boys from the Fifth Form upwards, two Common Rooms and a quiet courtyard garden.
The House crest is described as a 'Cresent Azure thereupon a Cresent Gules' but is commonly referred to as 'The Blue Moon'; the motto 'Frere Aime Frere' is that of the Frere family. The House colours are navy and maroon.
Mr Richard Hunter, who joined Bartle Frere in September 2005, is the Resident Tutor and Tutor to Removes (Year 9). He teaches Latin and Classical Civilization. Outside the classroom, he helps organise Haileybury's renowned MUN programme and is involved in coaching football and athletics. His interests include reading English literature, running, watching and playing cricket, and playing football.
Mr Toby Parker tutors the Middles. As well as being a tutor in Bartle Frere, he teaches Art, History of Art and Theory of Knowledge. When he is not teaching, he is Haileybury's archivist and likes nothing better than helping out with Duke of Edinburgh expeditions in the Peak District.
Mr Michael Perrins was born in Cape Town, South Africa and educated at Rondebosch Boys' High & Prep Schools. Michael joined Haileybury in September 2000 from Giggleswick School in North Yorkshire. Having worked as a TV News Writer in addition to teaching in both South Africa and England, he is keen on current affairs, politics, cricket and rugby - having refereed rugby at various levels for many years. At Haileybury he served as Housemaster in Batten before joining the Bartle Frere tutor team, in addition to his duties as Head of Political Studies and Director of MUN. He also teaches the RS Christian Perspectives course to the Middles. He is married to Jenny and has three sons, Anthony, Richard and William.
The following excerpt is from the House handbook:
Bartle Frere has high expectations for all members of the House. The Housemaster and tutor team work alongside the pupils to provide a supportive, well-structured and happy environment. This enables boys to develop their talents in both academic and extra-curricular areas, and to become well-rounded individuals who appreciate the importance of life-long learning, traditional values, service and leadership.
Bartle Frere is a strong, caring community with a recognisable sense of esprit de corps. It is committed to supporting its members through teamwork and open communication.
Bartle Frere insists upon and fosters honesty, integrity, reliability, decency, leadership, tolerance and industry.
Bartle Frere promotes high standards in achievement and behaviour. It values academic engagement, good manners and turnout, service to others, creativity, loyalty, and respect of convention.
Just as in the past, today's Bartle Frere welcomes, encourages and nurtures boys with a broad sweep of talents. We continue to remember and be proud of the achievements of former members of the House who have gone on to enjoy success after leaving Haileybury; the diversity of their achievements can be seen in this brief list of Old Boys:
Viscount Field Marshall Edmund Allenby (Soldier)
Sir Horace Tasker-Smith (HM Consul General)
Rt Revd Arthur Karney (1st Bishop of Johannesburg)
George Stephenson (Captain Irish rugby XV)
Revd Basil Jellicoe (Housing reformer)
Ivan Millar (Boxer)
Sir John Manduell CBE (Musician)
Dom Joly (Comedian and TV presenter)
