Haileybury is an ambitious academic school and we have a good record of successful applications to Oxbridge. The school encourages students with an excellent GCSE record (c. 5A*s +) to apply to Oxford or Cambridge. The applications deadline for Oxbridge is 15 October of the Upper Sixth year and so early preparation (starting in the Lower Sixth) is essential.
More information can be obtained from the school's Oxbridge Handbook available to pupils on the internal school network. You may also wish to visit the University websites:
Lower Sixth prospective Oxbridge candidates group
The group was inaugurated at Haileybury in 2009 with a view to preparing pupils in the Lower Sixth year who have been identified as genuine, realistic Oxbridge candidates as effectively as possible for the Oxbridge application and interview process.
The group meets once a fortnight and provides "ring-fenced" time for Lower Sixth pupils to undertake research on Oxford and Cambridge university and, more specifically, on the collegiate system and undergraduate courses that are available at both universities. All pupils in the group are issued with an extremely useful publication entitled "Getting into Oxford and Cambridge University" by Natalie Lancer, which presents concrete, practical advice and guidance on all aspects of the Oxbridge application process. Also, guest speakers from Oxbridge and other academic fields, are invited to give a lecture to the group on their area of expertise and, in addition, pupils are strongly encouraged to attend the many public lectures which are organised by societies at Haileybury.
As the Lower Sixth year progresses, pupils are set various tasks and targets - choosing their university, course and college; completing drafts of their personal statement; organising relevant work experience placements; preparing for Admissions Tests and interviews - so that they are ready to complete their online UCAS application form at the start of their Upper Sixth year, well in advance of the deadline for submission of Oxbridge applications on 15 October each year.
In order to keep the number of pupils to manageable proportions, and to make the provision of individual advice and guidance to these pupils as efficacious as possible, attendance at this group is by invitation only.
