Application and Entry

Applications:

Once parents decide that they would like their son or daughter to join Haileybury, they are asked to submit the formal Application Form. On receipt of this, a potential entrant's name will be formally registered on the School's lists. At Haileybury we will continue to process applications for as long as we realistically have places available. Usually there comes a point when our lists will close, and while we do not encourage multiple applications to schools, early application is always recommended and is never disadvantageous!

Once a child is registered for entry, we will explain step-by-step the procedure with regard to entry tests and the formal offering of places.

Entry tests:

Haileybury is a selective co-educational boarding school, although we are unequivocally not one of those highly selective schools whose successful applicants are massively outnumbered by those who are denied entry after sitting tests. However, pupils' entry into Haileybury is only confirmed after they have successfully demonstrated sound academic potential in entrance tests and after we have received reports from their current schools in support of their application.

Tests for entry into the Lower School (Year 7) at 11+

Tests for 11+ entry for boys and girls are sat at Haileybury at the end of the January preceding arrival in September and comprise tests in Verbal Reasoning, English and Maths. The results of these tests are usually published within one week of the candidates sitting the papers, after which places are formally offered.

Those applying for scholarships should contact the Registrar directly for further information about dates for those exams.

Tests for entry into the Main School (Year 9) at 13+

The majority of those coming to Haileybury at 13+ will have attended traditional prep schools which prepare pupils for the Common Entrance examinations. These take place in pupils' own schools at the beginning of the June preceding arrival at Haileybury in September and comprise papers covering a full range of academic subjects.

The results of the Common Entrance examinations are published within one week of the final examination paper, although places are formally offered at the beginning of the academic year preceding entry, conditional upon applicants satisfying the entry criteria. The Haileybury pass mark at Common Entrance is 55%.

For those not attending schools which automatically prepare for the Common Entrance, we have our own tests in Verbal Reasoning, English and Maths. These tests can be sat at any mutually convenient time at Haileybury or, in the case of applicants from overseas and by arrangement, at pupils' schools abroad.

If you are applying for a 13+ day place, please contact the Registrar directly.

Tests for entry into the Sixth Form (Year 12)

These are sat at Haileybury in the middle of the November preceding arrival in September and comprise tests in Maths, English, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning. The results of these tests are published in early December, conditional upon pupils achieving six B grades at GCSE level (and pass grades in English and Maths), after which places will be formally offered.

Please be aware the closing date for applications into the Lower Sixth for September 2010 has passed. If you wish to be considered for the waiting list, please e-mail Lizzie Alexander with your details, a recent school report and the subjects you wish to study in the Sixth Form.

Candidates wishing to apply for September 2011 should also forward details, reports and subjects and be prepared to come to the UK on Thursday, 11 November 2010 for examinations.

Current Haileybury pupils

We expect every A Level pupil entering our Sixth Form to be capable of studying at least three subjects to A2 level. Our entry requirements for joining the Sixth Form are changing.

For pupils who joined the School before 1 September 2006, the Sixth Form matriculation (admission) requirement is a minimum of six GCSE passes (grades A* - C) with at least four of those passes at B grade level.

For pupils who joined the School from 1 September 2006, the Sixth Form matriculation (admission) requirement is a minimum of six GCSE passes at least at B grade level.

For pupils joining the School directly into the Sixth Form, the admission requirement is a minimum of six GCSE passes at least at B grade level. Applicants from overseas who are not taking GCSE/IGCSE will be required to sit special admissions tests.

"I first set my heart on coming to Haileybury when I visited the school last year. Leaving home (which is a 17-hour flight away) was a big step but actually being here has made it much easier as there are so many things to get involved in, the atmosphere is wonderful and everyone is so friendly." - Nga Nguyen
